語源
「subtitle」はラテン語の要素「sub-」と「titulus」から由来し、「sub-」は「下に／下へ」、「titulus」は「題名・銘文」を意味した。
英語では接頭辞「sub-」と「title」を組み合わせて、主題の下に置かれる副題という意味で作られ、その後映画や映像で音声の翻訳・書き起こしを画面に表示する文字列を指すように拡張された。
当初は「主題の下に置かれる副題」を指したが、次第に「映像で音声を翻訳・文字化して画面に表示する文字列」という意味も持つようになった。
