語源
『caption』はラテン語を起源とし、中世ラテン語と古フランス語を経て成立した。具体的には中世ラテン語の 'captionem'（動作を表す名詞）に遡り、最終的には『取る』を意味するラテン語 'capere' に由来する。
『caption』は古フランス語／アングロフランス語の 'caption' として伝わり、中英語で受け継がれ、英語では「見出し」「題名」などの専門的意味へ発展した。
もともとは『取る』という意味に関連していたが、やがて『画像や項目に付けられる見出し・短い説明文』という現在の意味へ変化した。
