語源
「stereocard」は現代英語の造語で、接頭辞の「stereo-」（ギリシャ語'stereos'＝「立体、固体」）と「card」（古フランス語'carte'、ラテン語'charta'＝「紙、葉」）の結合から成る。
「stereocard」は19世紀の'stereograph'や二語表記の'stereo card'などの用語から発展し、立体写真を台紙に貼ったものを指す語として最終的に現代英語の'stereocard'になった。
当初は「ステレオスコープで見るための立体写真を貼ったカード」を意味しており、意味自体は大きく変わらず、現在では主に骨董・収集対象としての歴史的用語として使われることが多い。
