「staminate」はニューラテン語の'staminatus'に由来し、最終的にはラテン語'stamen'（糸、経糸：雄しべの糸状の形に由来）から来ている。「pistillate」はニューラテン語の'pistillatus'に由来し、最終的にはラテン語'pistillum'（すりこぎ、雌しべを示す語源）から来ている。
「staminate」はラテン語'stamen'と形容詞化接尾辞からニューラテン語で作られ、18–19世紀に英語の植物学用語として取り入れられた。「pistillate」もラテン語'pistillum'からニューラテン語を経て同時期に英語に入った。
