語源
「square」は古フランス語（ノルマン語）『esquare/esquarre』に由来し、さらに俗ラテン語の『exquadra』や中世ラテン語の『squadra』に遡り、語根は正方形を作る・形成することに関連します。
『square』は古フランス語の『esquarre』や中世ラテン語の『squadra』から変化し、中英語を経て現代英語の『square』になりました。
当初は「4辺の図形、または正方形にするもの」を意味しましたが、次第に場所（広場）、数学的概念（平方数）、清算や一致させるなどの比喩的用法へと拡大しました。
