「slough」は古英語の語 'slōh'（記録上は 'sloh' などの形）に由来し、もともとは「皮」「殻」「はぎ取られるもの」を意味した。
中英語の 'sloughen' や方言形の 'sluffen' などを経て、現代英語の動詞 'slough' や派生名詞 'sloughing' が生じた。
当初は「皮」や「はぎ取られるもの」を指していたが、現在も文字どおりの「脱皮・剥離」を意味し、比喩的に「不要なものを捨てる」という意味にも広がった。
