「showstopper」は現代英語に由来し、'show'（公の上演・見せ物）＋'stopper'（止めるもの）の複合語である。
20世紀のショービジネス用語として、拍手でショーが中断されるほどの演目を指す言葉として生まれ、のちに一般的な口語や技術用語にも広まった。
