語源
「sexton」は中世ラテン語の'sacristanus'に由来し、'sacrista-'は聖具室（聖器・聖服を置く部屋）を指し、'-anus'はその職に関わる人を表す接尾辞である。
中英語の形（'sexten'／'sexton'など）に変化し、アンゴ・ノルマン語や古フランス語を経て中世ラテン語の'sacristanus'に由来する語形から現代英語の'sexton'になった。
当初は「聖具室の管理者（サクリスタン）」を意味したが、次第に教会建物や墓地の管理、鐘つきなどの役割を含む「教会の管理人」という意味に広がった。
