語源
'self-definition'は近代英語の複合語で、古英語の'self'（『自己・自分自身』を意味）とラテン語の'definitio'に由来する'definition'（『境界づけ・説明・意味の決定』を意味）から成る。
'definition'はラテン語の'definire'/'definitio'（制限する・決定する）から古フランス語や中英語を経て近代英語の'definition'になった。'self'は古英語'self'から継承され、近代英語で'RE + definition'の形で結合して複合語が作られた。
元来は『意味を限定すること（定義）』に関する語だが、複合語としては『その定義作用を自分自身に適用すること（自己定義）』という具体的な意味に発展した。
