語源
「satrap」はギリシャ語の「'satrapēs'」に由来し、元は古代ペルシア語の語幹 xšaθra-（「領域」）と -pāvan（「守る者」）から成る語がギリシャ語で取り入れられたものです。
「satrap」はギリシャ語の 'satrapēs' を経てラテン語の 'satrapes' として伝わり、中世英語へ（場合によっては古フランス語を介して）入り、現代英語の 'satrap' になりました。
当初は「州の守護者／保護者」を意味しましたが、時代を経て「州知事」を指す称号となり、さらに転じて「従属的な支配者」や「横暴で腐敗した役人」を意味するようになりました。
