語源
「sacrilege」はラテン語の'sacrilegium'に由来し、'sacer'は「神聖な」を意味し、'legere'は「集める（この複合語ではのちに『盗む』と解釈された）」を意味した。
ラテン語'sacrilegium'から古フランス語'sacrelege'を経て中英語の'sacrilege'になり、最終的に現代英語の『sacrilege』となった。
当初は「神聖なものの窃盗」を意味していたが、時間をかけて「神聖なものの侵害・冒とく」という現在の意味（および重要なものに対する無礼）の意味へ変化した。
