'run-on'は英語の複合語で、古英語の'rinnan'（走る・流れる）と古英語の'on'（上に、～に）から成る。現代英語で結合され、区切りのない継続の意味を表す。
'run'は古英語の'rinnan'（中英語の'rinnen'/'runnen'）から発展して現在の動詞 'run' になった。'on'は古英語の'on'から来て大きな変化はなかった。'run-on'という複合語は現代英語で（特に文法用語として）19–20世紀ごろに用いられるようになった。
もともとは『（走るように）続く』という行為を示したが、複合語としては『適切な区切りがなく続いていること』（例：ランオン文）を示す名詞・形容詞用法へと拡張された。銀行業などでは『（預金の）急速な継続的引き出し』の意でも関連して用いられる。
