語源
「rostral」はラテン語の『rostralis』（『rostrum』から）に由来し、『rostrum』は「くちばし（または突き出た吻状部分）」を意味した。
『rostral』はラテン語『rostralis』から近代科学語（Neo-Latin）を経て英語の専門用語（19世紀以降）として入ってきた。
当初は「くちばしに関する／くちばしのような」といった意味だったが、次第に解剖学で「（体の）前方・吻側へ向かう」という方向を示す語として使われるようになった。
