語源
「rev」は「revolution（回転、革命）」の略語から生じ、さらにラテン語の「revolvere（re- は『後へ』、volvere は『転がす／回す』）」に由来します。
「revolvere」は古フランス語やラテン語を経て英語の「revolution」「revolve」などになり、20世紀に自動車関連で回転数を指す略語として「rev」が現れ、動詞として『回転数を上げる』という意味で使われるようになりました。
元々は「回転」や「回転数」を指しましたが、やがて『エンジンの回転数を上げる』という動詞的用法になり、さらに比喩的に『勢いを増す／活気づける』という意味にも広がりました。
