語源
「realness」は中英語後期に由来し、形容詞「real」（最終的にラテン語の 'realis' に由来）と古英語由来の接尾辞「-ness」を結合してできた語です。
中英語では 'realnesse' のような綴りで現れ、接尾辞 '-nesse' を 'real' に付けた形が次第に現代英語の 'realness' に整えられました。
当初は単に「実在すること・現実である状態」を表していましたが、時間とともに本物らしさや文化・哲学的な「現実性」というニュアンスでも用いられるようになりました。
