『quilt』は中英語の語『quilte』に由来し、さらに古フランス語の『cuilte』、ラテン語の『culcita』（意味は「マットレス」「詰め物をしたクッション」）にさかのぼります。
中英語の『quilte』が古フランス語の『cuilte』から変化し、時代を経て縫い合わせた寝具や『縫い合わせる』という動詞の意味に狭まって現代英語の『quilt』『quilting』になりました。
