語源
'prothesis'はギリシャ語、具体的には語『πρόθεσις』（プロテーシス）に由来し、接頭辞『pro-』は「前」を、'thesis'（'tithēmi'より）は「置くこと／置かれたもの」を意味した。
'prothesis'は後期ラテン語・中世ラテン語の『prothesis』を経て、学術語や典礼語として英語に入った。形は『prothesis』のまま残った。
当初は「前に置くこと」や「献納・配置」を意味したが、時代を経て語頭の音の挿入を指す音韻現象や、聖餐準備の儀礼を指すようになった。
