語源
「protasis」はギリシャ語の語「protásis」（πρότασις）に由来し、「prot-」は「第一・前」を意味し、「-tasis」は「置く・提示すること」を意味する語根に由来します。
「protasis」はラテン語（後期ラテン語・中世ラテン語）の 'protasis' を経て英語に入り、文法や論理の専門用語として用いられるようになりました。
当初は「前に置かれる命題・表現」を意味しましたが、次第に「条件文の前件（if節）」というより専門的な文法的意味へと発展しました。
