語源
『precatechumenate』は教会ラテン語（ネオラテン語）由来で、ラテン語の『prae-』（「前」を意味する）とギリシャ語の『katechumen-（katechoumenos）』（「教えを受ける者」を意味する）から構成されています。
『precatechumenate』は教会ラテン語の『praecatechumenatus』のような語から英語に取り入れられ、『prae-』と『catechumenate』の結合によって生まれ、教理入門に先立つ段階を指す語として定着しました。
当初は特にラテン語・教会用語としての「教理入門前の段階」を指していましたが、現代でもその宗教的専門語的意味を維持しています。
