語源
『preanthesis』は接頭辞『pre-』（ラテン語『prē』＝「前」）と『anthesis』（ギリシア語『ἀνθῆσις』＝「開花」）の結合に由来する。
『anthesis』はギリシア語から学術用語としてラテン語・英語に採り入れられ、その後『pre-』が付けられて『開花前』を意味する近代の複合語『preanthesis』が形成された。
当初から文字通り「開花の前」を意味しており、その植物学的意味は現在まで大きく変わっていない。
