「pre-implantation」はラテン語の接頭辞「pre-」（ラテン語「prae」から、意味は「前」）と「implantation」（最終的にラテン語の「implantare」から）を組み合わせたもの。ここで「in-」は「中へ／に」、"plantare"は「植える」を意味する。

「implantation」は後期ラテン語の「implantare」や古仏語の「implanter」などから変化し、中英語で「implant」として入り、最終的に現代英語の「implantation」になった。現代の科学用語として接頭辞「pre-」を付けて「pre-implantation」が作られた。

当初「implantation」は「中へ植え付ける／固定する」という意味だったが、生物学では次第に「胚が子宮壁に着床すること」を指すようになった。それに伴い「pre-implantation」は「その着床の前」を意味するようになった。
