語源
「prayer」は古仏語の「preiere（preiereなどの綴り）」に由来し、さらにラテン語の『precaria』（『precari＝懇願する、願う』に由来）にさかのぼる。'prec-'は『願い・懇願』を表した。
古仏語の「preiere」が中英語の「preiere／preyer」を経て現代英語の「prayer」になった。
当初は『請願・懇願』という一般的な意味だったが、時代とともに『（神などへの）祈り』や典礼上の祈祷の意味に変化した。
