語源
「pratiloma」はサンスクリット由来の複合語で、接頭辞の「prati-」は「逆・向かって」、語根の「loma」は「毛」を意味した。
「pratiloma」はヴェーダ期から古典サンスクリット、のちのアーユルヴェーダやヨーガ文献で専門用語として使われ、英語へは学術用語として音韻形を大きく変えずに取り入れられた。
元来は「毛に逆らって」という文字通りの意味だったが、次第に「自然の順序に反する」「逆向きである」という広い意味で使われるようになった。
