語源
「post-tonic」はラテン語の接頭辞「post」（＝「後」）と、ギリシャ語の「tonos」からラテン語を経て入った「tonic」（＝「音・張り」）を組み合わせた英語の語である。
「tonic」はギリシャ語の「tonos」からラテン語「tonicus」を経て英語に入った。現代英語ではラテン語由来の接頭辞「post-」と結合して、音声学の記述語として19–20世紀に定着した。
もともとは「後」＋「音・張り」を意味していたが、音声学では現在「（語の）強勢（トニック）の後に来るもの」を指す専門用語として用いられている。
