「post-predicative」は近代英語の合成語で、接頭辞'post'（ラテン語'post'＝「後」）と'predicative'（ラテン語'praedicativus'から、'praedicare'に関連）から成る。
「predicative」はラテン語'praedicativus'（後期ラテン語・古フランス語'predicatif'経由）から中英語に入り、近代英語で接頭辞'post-'が付されて'post-predicative'となり、『修飾対象や述語の後に位置する』という意味を表す語になった。
語根はもともと'後'（post）や『言う・述べる』を示していたが、現代の言語学用語では『修飾する対象の後に置かれる』という位置の意味に固まった。
