語源
「pediment」はイタリア語の「pedimento」に由来し、語幹の「ped-」はラテン語の「pes」（足、基部）に関連している。
「pediment」はイタリア語の「pedimento」（のちにフランス語の「pédiment」）から変化し、最終的に現代英語の「pediment」になった。
当初は「基部」や「足場」を表す語感だったが、次第に古典建築の三角形の頂部装飾を指すようになり、後に地質学の傾斜面にも拡張された。
