「pan-Arabism」は現代英語で、ギリシャ語の接頭辞「pan-」（ギリシャ語 πᾶν、意味は「すべて」）と「Arabism」（アラブ民族・文化を指す「Arab」）から成る。
「pan-」（ギリシャ語）と「Arab」（ラテン語・中世ラテン語の 'Arabia'、最終的にはアラビア語の 'Arab' に由来）が20世紀初頭に英語で結合し、アラブ統一を唱える運動を指す語「pan-Arabism」が生まれた。'Arab' の語はラテン語やフランス語を経て英語に入った。
当初は「すべてのアラブの統一」という概念を表す語として作られたが、次第にアラブ統一の文化的理想全般と、20世紀中頃の具体的な政治運動・政策の両方を意味するようになった。
