語源
「optics」はギリシャ語を経てラテン語・ニューラテン語から来ており、具体的にはギリシャ語の「optikós（ὀπτικός）」に由来し、語根「opt-（ὀπτ-)」は「見ること・視覚」を意味した。
「optics」はラテン語・ニューラテン語の「optica」などを経て英語に入り、17世紀初頭から光と視覚の学問を指す語として使われるようになった。
当初は「視覚の学説・学問」を意味していたが、時を経て光学機器や（比喩的に）見え方・印象を指す用法へと拡大した。
