語源
『oestradiol』はニューラテン語に由来し、ギリシャ語の'oistros'（性的興奮・発情を意味する）に由来する結合形『oestra-』と、'2つの水酸基'を意味する化学接尾辞『-diol』から成る。
『oestradiol』は20世紀前半にホルモンの単離・同定後に造語された。米英差で初頭の'o'を落とした綴り『estradiol』が特に米国で一般化した。
当初は発情や性的活動に関連する名称だったが、次第に特定の化合物である17β-エストラジオールおよびその医薬形態を指す語となった。
