語源
「normlessness」は近代英語で、'norm'に否定の接尾辞'-less'を付け、さらに名詞化の接尾辞'-ness'を付して作られた語です。'norm'はラテン語の'norma'（大工の墨壺・定規、規則）に由来します。
'norm'はラテン語の'norma'から古フランス語'norme'を経て中英語の'norm'になりました。その後、英語の接尾辞構成により'normlessness'（規範の欠如）という語が形成されました。
もともと'norma'は物理的な定規や測定具を意味しましたが、次第に『基準・規則』の意味に広がり、『normlessness』は『その基準がないこと』を意味するようになりました。
