語源
「nonrealist」は現代英語の構成要素に由来する。接頭辞「non-」はラテン語の『non』（＝「〜でない」）から、'realist'はフランス語『réaliste』、さらにラテン語『realis』（＝「実在の、現実の」）に由来する。
『realist』は19世紀のフランス語『réaliste』（美術・哲学の運動『réalisme』に関連）から発展し、さらにラテン語『realis』にさかのぼる。Modern Englishでは接頭辞non-を付して否定の複合語が作られた。
元々は単に「現実主義者ではない」という否定を表していたが、哲学・倫理学・美学などの分野では、独立した客観的実在やリアリズムの主張を否定する立場を指す専門用語として定着した。
