「antirealist」は現代英語で接頭辞「anti-」（ギリシャ語の「anti-」、『反〜、対〜』を意味）と「realist」（『実在主義者』）を結合して作られた語である。
「realist」はフランス語の「réaliste」や英語の「realism」を経て、後期ラテン語の「realis」（ラテン語の「res」＝『物・事』に関連）に由来する。「antirealist」は英語で「realist」の前に「anti-」を付けて『実在主義に反対するもの』を表すようになった。
