語源
「nonrational」は英語起源で、接頭辞の「non-」はラテン語の「non（～でない）」に由来し、「rational」はラテン語の「rationalis」（そこでは「ratio」が「理性・理屈」を意味した）に由来します。
「rational」はラテン語の「rationalis」（さらに「ratio」）から古フランス語を経て中英語に入り、現代英語の「rational」になりました。否定の接頭辞「non-」はラテン語の「non」から中英語に取り入れられ、結合して「nonrational」となりました。
当初は「理性を備えていない／理性的でない」を意味しましたが、次第に日常語で「非合理的」を表すほか、数学では「（整数の）比で表せない（＝無理数）」という専門的意味でも用いられるようになりました。
