語源
「nonperiodicity」は近代英語で形成され、『non-』を『periodicity』に付けた語である。『non-』は古英語／ラテン語の「non」（「～でない」の意）に由来し、『periodicity』は最終的にギリシャ語の「periodos」（「周回／回ること」の意）に由来する。
ギリシャ語の「periodos」がラテン語・中世ラテン語の「periodicus／periodicitas」などに変化し、中英語を経て現代英語の「periodicity」になった。現代英語では生産的な接頭辞「non-」を付けて「nonperiodicity」が作られた。
もともと語根は「周回すること」を意味していたが、次第に「一定間隔で繰り返すこと（周期性）」を意味するようになり、『nonperiodicity』はその「周期性がないこと」を表す語となった。
