語源
「nonorganic」は、否定接頭辞「non-」（古英語/古ノルド語で「〜でない」）と、ギリシャ語の「organikos」を経てラテン語「organicus」から来た「organic」を結合してできた語です。
「organic」はギリシャ語の「organon」（「器具」「臓器」）に由来し、そこから「organikos」「organicus」を経て現代英語になった。後に否定接頭辞「non-」を付けて「nonorganic」という複合語が形成されました。
当初「organic」は器具や臓器に関する意味だったが、次第に「生物に関する」「炭素を基盤とする」の意味に変化した。『nonorganic』はそれらの有機的特徴がないことを示す語として使われ、現代でもその意味が続いています。
