語源
「nonlocal」は英語に由来し、接頭辞「non-」と形容詞「local」から形成された語で、「non-」は「〜でない」を意味し、「local」はラテン語の「localis（場所に関する）」に由来する。
「local」はラテン語の「localis」（さらに「locus」＝「場所」から）から中世ラテン語・中英語を経て現在の英語「local」になり、その「local」に英語で生産的に接頭辞「non-」が付いて「nonlocal」が作られた。
当初は単に「局所的でない」を意味していたが、時間とともに物理学・数学・プログラミングなどの専門分野での技術的な意味を獲得し、一般的な意味も維持している。
