語源
「nonfiction」は英語に由来し、接頭辞「non-」（ラテン語 'non' に由来）と「fiction」（ラテン語 'fictio'／'fingere' に由来）を組み合わせた語で、「non-」は「〜でない」、'fingere'は「形作る・作り出す」を意味した。
「fiction」はラテン語 'fictio'（'fingere' に由来）から古フランス語 'fiction' を経て中英語の 'fiction' になり、英語では19世紀〜20世紀初頭にハイフン付きの 'non-fiction' として現れ、その後 'nonfiction' として定着した。
当初は単に「虚構ではない」という否定的な意味だったが、次第に事実に基づく文章・作品のジャンル名として定着した。
