語源
「nonclassical」は英語に由来し、否定の接頭辞「non-」（ラテン語の「non」＝「〜でない」）が「classical」（ラテン語「classicus」＝「階級に属する・最上級の」）に付いてできた語です。
「classical」はラテン語の「classicus」→ 後期ラテン語／古フランス語（例：「classique」）を経て中英語の「classical」になりました。否定接頭辞「non-」は英語で否定を作るために用いられ、「non-」＋「classical」で「nonclassical」が生まれました。
当初は単に「古典的でない」を意味しましたが、のちに（特に物理学などの）専門分野で「古典的な説明では捉えられない性質」を示す意味に拡張されました。
