語源
「non-locality」は英語由来で、否定接頭辞「non-」（ラテン語 'non' の「〜でない」）と名詞「locality」（後期ラテン語 'localitas'／'localis'、ラテン語 'locus'「場所」に由来）を組み合わせてできた語である。
「locality」は古フランス語 'localité' や中世ラテン語 'localitas' から変化し、最終的にはラテン語 'locus'（「場所」）に由来する；「non-locality」は近代の科学英語で 'non-' と 'locality' を組み合わせて生まれた。
もともとは単に「局所的でない状態／1か所に限定されないこと」を意味していたが、20世紀以降の物理学で、局所性では説明できない相関や相互作用を指す専門的な意味を持つようになった。
