語源
「non-isometric」は否定接頭辞「non-」（現代英語、最終的にはラテン語の「non」＝「〜でない」に由来）と「isometric」から成る。「isometric」はギリシャ語の「isos」（「等しい」）と「metron」（「尺度・測ること」）に由来する「isometrikos」に由来する。
「isometric」はギリシャ語の「isometrikos」から（ラテン語や中世を経て）英語に入った語で「等しい寸法の」を意味する。現代英語では生産的な接頭辞「non-」が付されて「non-isometric」が作られた。
当初「isometric」は「等しい寸法・尺度の」を意味したが、「non-isometric」は単に「等しくない」を示していた。時間とともに数学や生物学などの専門分野で『等長でない・等尺でない』という技術的な用法が確立した。
