「mugwump（ミグワンプ）」はアルゴンキン語派の語（例: 'mugquomp'/'mogquomp'）に由来し、「重要な人」「戦士の長」を意味していた。
この語はアルゴンキン諸語から英語に取り入れられ、19世紀には俗語として用いられ、特に1884年の米国選挙で共和党の一部反対派を皮肉的に指して使われたことで広まった。
