「monument」はラテン語の『monumentum』に由来し、そこでは『monere』が「思い起こさせる（あるいは警告する）」を意味し、接尾辞『-mentum』は道具や結果を示した。
ラテン語の『monumentum』は古フランス語の『monument』を経て中英語に入り、最終的に現代英語の『monument』になった。
当初は「思い出させるもの、記念のもの」という一般的な意味だったが、次第に具体的な建造された記念物や保存された史跡を指すようになった。
