語源
『modernise』は「modern」に由来し、最終的にはラテン語の『modernus』（『modo』「ついさっき、ちょうど」から）にさかのぼる。動詞化接尾辞の『-ise』はフランス語を経由したもの。
『modern』はラテン語の『modernus』に由来する。フランス語で『moderniser』が作られ、18–19世紀頃に英語の動詞『modernise』が採用され、現在の『modernise／modernize』やその分詞形へと至った。
当初は「現代的にする（modernにする）」という意味で、その基本的な意味は維持されているが、技術的・社会的・様式的・手続き的な更新など、より広い範囲を含むようになった。
