語源
「moderato」はイタリア語から来ており、語根の「moder-」はラテン語で「測られた／抑制された」を意味し、「moderare」は「抑える・程よくする」を意味した。
ラテン語の『moderatus』（『moderare』の過去分詞）からイタリア語『moderato』へ変化し、後に音楽用語として英語に取り入れられた。
当初は「抑制された・節度のある」という意味だったが、次第に音楽用語として「中くらいのテンポで」に特化した意味へ変化した。
