「misanthrope」はギリシャ語の「misanthropos」に由来し、「misos」は「憎しみ」、「anthropos」は「人間」を意味しました。

「misanthropos」はフランス語の「misanthrope」に変わり、中英語を経て現代英語の「misanthrope」になりました。

最初は「人類を嫌う者」を意味し、この意味は現代でもほぼ同じです。
