'micronucleus'はギリシャ語とラテン語に由来する：接頭辞'micro-'はギリシャ語'mikros'（小さい）に由来し、'nucleus'はラテン語'nucleus'（『nux』の小形＝核、こぶしのようなもの）に由来する。
'micronucleus'は現代の科学用語として、ギリシャ語由来の接頭辞'micro-'とラテン語由来の'nucleus'を結合して造られ、19世紀末から20世紀にかけて細胞生物学の語彙として英語に定着した。
