語源
「malignity」はラテン語の「malignitas」に由来し、「malignus」は「悪い性質をもつ・悪意をもつ」という意味だった。
「malignitas」は古フランス語の「malignité」を経て中英語の「malignité／malignity」になり、最終的に現代英語の「malignity」になった。
元々は「悪い気質」や「悪意」を指していたが、時代を経て意味はほぼ保持されつつ、医学的には「悪性（の性質）」を指す用法も生じた。
