語源
「main」は古英語の単語「mægen」（古ノルド語にも同形の「megin」あり）に由来し、語幹は「力」「勢力」を意味した。
古英語の「mægen」（「力、勢力」）から中英語の「main」（「主要な」「主たる」）へ変化し、さらに複数形の「mains」は「水道本管」や「電力本供給」のような意味で使われるようになった。
当初は「力・勢力」を意味したが、時とともに「主要な」「中心的な」という意味に変化し、さらに「主要な供給・本管」や「メイン料理」といった具体的な用法へ発展した。
