語源
『magistracy』はラテン語の『magistratus』に由来し、『magister』は「長・指導者／主人」を意味した。接尾辞の『-acy』（ラテン語の『-atia』や古フランス語の『-acie』経由）は「状態・性質」を表す。
『magistracy』は中世ラテン語の『magistratia』や古フランス語の『magistracie』から変化し、最終的に現代英語の『magistracy』になった。
当初は「（ローマや中世の）この官職の地位・尊号」を指したが、時代を経て「官職・権限・管轄、あるいは官職群」を意味する現在の用法に発展した。
