語源
「lock-in」は英語に由来し、動詞 'lock'（施錠する）と副詞・前置詞 'in'（内へ）を結合してできた語である。
『lock』は古英語の 'locc'（錠・締め具・囲い）に由来し、『in』は古英語の 'in'（中へ、内に）に由来する。これら二つの要素が結合して、現代英語で名詞・句動詞としての 'lock-in' になった。
当初は物理的に『内に閉じ込める』『施錠する』という行為を指したが、徐々に比喩的に拡大し、契約上・技術上での『切り替えを困難にする状態（ロックイン）』や、参加者が一定時間その場に留まるイベントなどの意味でも使われるようになった。
